You Can’t Make This Stuff Up (Special Thursday Edition): New earth?
2 Comments | posted May 03rd, 2007 at 10:38 am by Kate Torgovnick

Alright, so my post on Tuesday was a little lame. So I’m coming at you again because I found better inspiration that you really can’t make up: this week European scientists discovered an extremely earth-like planet 50 million light years away. My first thought when I heard this was, “Woo hoo! We’re saved.” But now that I’m reading more about it, new earth kind of sucks. Consider these facts:

New-earth orbits a star very similar to the sun. But since it takes far less time for the planet to get around its sun, a year on this new planet would be about 13 days. Come on, years seem to go by quick enough as it is.

Also because the earth doesn’t rotate the same way as earth, there will be a sunny and dark side of the planet. So what, we have to choose? Two guesses where all the goths will go. Oh, but the temperature on new-earth is described as “just right” so maybe we can leave all our winter coats behind when we make the spaceship voyage?

The sun on new-earth will appear red all the time. And it will appear about 20 times larger than our current sun. No real beef with that.

New-earth is called “581 c.” But I don’t know, “earth” really seems to roll better off the tongue.

Gravity on new earth will be 1.6 times as strong as it is here. So people who have a scale (and really, it’s time to throw it out anyway) will have to adjust to becoming instantly much heavier. And maybe we’ll have to go back to walking on all fours? Who knows.

And we’re not sure if new-earth has water. That could be a deal-breaker.

Please post any new facts you know about 581 c. I’m a little obsessed.

  1. What would a 13-day year be like? Would you get a birthday every thirteen days? You’d have to share it with 1/13 of the population. So, parties ever day on 581 c?

I like the prospect of a red sun (as you can tell from my Crucial Minutiae cube).

New earth=party planet! Now someone just has to invent a space craft that will get us 50 lightyears away quickly.
