Composing a Life: Why We’re Not Spoiled Brats, Damn It
1 Comment | posted March 13th, 2007 at 10:53 pm by Courtney E. Martin

A reporter for Pink Magazine interviewed Kate, Jennifer, and me about intergenerational conflict among women on our lunch break from writing at the New York Public Library (Florian taught us to call it nipple, cause he’s Dutch and funny) the other day.

We talked about the complexity of mentorship, freelance insecurity, and a bunch of other interesting topics, but what really got me thinking was a brief fore into the land of Gen Y “entitlement.” Seems that in a survey of boomer ladies, the majority complained of our generation’s audacious sense of entitlement to meaningful work, fancy titles, and respect without paying the requisite dues.

My take: we are “entitled,” but that’s a great—even revolutionary—thing. We expect lives where our work is meaningful and our schedules flexible. We expect mutual respect in our mentorship relationships and work collaborations. We expect to be paid fair wages (this is a biggie for the gals) and get decent healthcare (not so easy for the freelance among us).

Instead of seeing this as evidence that our generation is a bunch of cocky brats, I wish older generations could see it as the fruit of their labor to make workplaces more fair and dreams for our lives more whole. And let’s be honest, who among us hasn’t done a mail merge and fetched a sandwich for a boss in our day? We have not been exempt from the mindless duties at the bottom of the ladder, we’re just determined to climb it.

  1. Amen, sister! As an older Gen X lady, I am here to say Bravo, keep climbing. Although I can understand how the ease with which you climb might seem unfair to boomer women who had to work so hard, I, too, wish they could see it as victory. xo, Kimmi
